Here are some of the community involvement projects our PTSA has planned for this school year. If you have ideas for projects, please feel free to contact Doug Stovall using our Contact Us page.
- April = Campus Clean-Up
- Ongoing = Pop Tab Collections Project (ongoing) & Blood Drive (ongoing -- for adults)
- Collecting pop tabs
is a great way not only to teach kids about philanthropy and the
importance of recycling, but also to raise funds to help children and
their families at the same time. We give the tabs to our local Ronald McDonald House,
which has an agreement with JEA allowing it to turn them in for
recycling and get a credit on its electric bill in return. Ronald
McDonald Houses collect pop tabs instead of entire aluminum cans
because the tabs are pure high-quality aluminum, unlike cans, which
consist of aluminum and other alloys. Tabs are also easier to store
than whole cans. Collect pop tabs to drop off in one of our collection jars in the office, or simply send them in with your student.
- The PTSA has a great way you can help not only your school but also the whole community: by donating blood. Just go to any Donor Center for the Florida Georgia Blood Alliance (the closest one is located at 10501 San Jose Blvd., Suites 4 & 5) and tell them you want to donate in the name of Mandarin Middle School (Account #2045). Your blood will help some needy person, and your donation will count toward a Blood Drive Award for our school. Check out the alliance's donation faqs here, and then help us save lives in our community!
- MMS PTSA collects used eyeglasses, to send to third world countries, and used cell phones, to send to Hubbard House. Please send in your donations any time. Boxes will be located by the main office.
Completed Projects:
- August 24 - September 4 was our Back-to-School Supplies Drive! The supplies we collected were distributed by the Mandarin Food Bank.
- November 2 - November 24 we participated in the 6th Annual Mr. Rogers's Neighborhood Sweater Drive. This program, sponsored by WJCT, honors the memory of Fred Rogers by collecting new and gently used sweaters, socks, jackets, sweatshirts and blankets for men, women, and children in our area.Thank you for helping to make this year’s Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive a success!
- December - January we helped support the E-Hawks Athletic Shoe Collection Program. Athletic shoes in both good AND worn out condition were collected; those in good condition were donated locally to families in need while worn out athletic shoes were given to the Nike-Reuse-A-Shoe Program (any brand of shoes accepted), where they will be recycled into materials for making various sports surfaces or consumer products. Check out how the shoes are recycled at http://www.nikereuseashoe.com/
